Board of Supervisors Appoints New County Librarian

(Santa Ana, CA)— The Board of Supervisors today appointed Helen Fried as the County Librarian.  Fried joined OC Public Libraries (OCPL) six years ago and stepped in as Acting Librarian in March of 2007.

“I am delighted to welcome Helen to the position at which, as Acting County Librarian, she has already proven herself to be so adept,” said Chairman John M.W. Moorlach.  “Her extensive background managing library operations will continue to enhance the quality programs and services that OC Public Libraries provides our community.”

As part of the County’s reorganization to consolidate departments and improve the County’s financial position through the sharing of administrative resources and achieving economies of scale, OC Public Libraries will be part of OC Community Resources.  Fried will report to Steve Franks as a member of the OC Community Resources Executive Management Team, which also includes the Directors of OC Community Services, OC Parks, and OC Animal Care.  Aligning these four service systems will increase access to and improve the delivery of services to our community.

Fried was employed by the Long Beach Public Library for more than 15 years in a number of administrative capacities before joining OC Public Libraries in 2002.  After working as head of OCPL’s Bibliographic Services division, she was appointed to the position of Assistant County Librarian in 2005 where she managed the introduction of downloadable audio books and initiated the Literary Orange festival.

Fried earned her Master’s Degree in Library Science and Information Management from the University of Southern California.  She is also a graduate of Orange County’s Leadership Academy, a training development program designed to present comprehensive and consistent management training for current and future County leaders.
