ACTION: What does the volunteer do?
Kim Kane stands out as one of OC Animal Care’s outstanding volunteers based on her commitment to improving the lives of Orange County’s homeless animals by offering them a second chance for placement in permanent homes with caring, responsible individuals and families.
Kim began volunteering with OC Animal Care in 2008 as a “dog walker” and “dog groomer.” Each week, she spends two or more days working with a variety of shelter dogs with the goal of improving their adoptability. Most of her time is dedicated to grooming dogs since many arrive at the shelter with severely matted fur and in dire need of a good haircut. Not only does grooming allow the dogs to look and feel better, it also makes them more appealing to potential adopters. Frequently, dogs are adopted immediately after Kim finishes cleaning them up. The likeable personalities and charming characteristics that were hidden under matted, dirty fur suddenly shine through!
In addition to grooming, Kim dedicates countless hours to walking, exercising and interacting with the shelter dogs. Walking dogs on a regular basis is an important step in keeping them socialized and stimulated. It also reduces the amount of stress they experience, enhances their health and improves their behavior. Most importantly, Kim’s efforts are contributing to each animal’s ability to experience a successful adoption.
NEED: What community or agency need does the volunteer address?
Kim is always willing to take on new projects at OC Animal Care. She recently became active in the Educational Outreach program and now leads shelter tours for students and Scouting groups. Outreach is an important tool in the Humane Education program in that it encourages local youth to become involved in promoting responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spaying and neutering of pets.
In addition to her other contributions, Kim partners with staff in coordinating special events at the shelter such as dog training demonstrations with her obedience club. This type of outreach motivates pet owners to enroll their dogs in training courses and demonstrates to the owners the enjoyment they’ll experience in working with their pets.
IMPACT: What is different as a result of the volunteer's service?
Kim provides exceptional support for busy staff by performing tasks that are essential to OC Animal Care’s daily operations. When she removes dogs from the restrictions they experience while confined in shelter cages, she is able to showcase individual personality traits and temperaments. This allows the public to interact with the animals in a less stressful environment. In addition, Kim answers questions posed by potential adopters regarding specific animals or general shelter policies.
INSPIRATION: What makes the volunteer unique/special?
Kim is a positive role model for other volunteers. She can be counted on to participate in a variety of activities that take place at the shelter and within the community. She is committed to her work at OC Animal Care on behalf of homeless pets and takes every opportunity to improve an animal’s chances of securing a permanent home. She inspires others to get involved and to give back to the community.
Kim is an excellent example of the volunteer team that currently serves with OC Animal Care. Since signing up to volunteer in 2008, she has dedicated more than 200 service hours, helping dozens of animals find their “forever homes.”
