Since 2006, Alan Suding has served as treasurer of the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Friends of the Library. His financial reports are exceptional and easy to follow; however, that important responsibility is just one component of his far-reaching volunteer endeavors.
Alan sorts through countless donations that the library receives throughout the year and assists other volunteers in organizing and setting up bimonthly book sales in the branch’s parking lot. To increase sales, he created book categories similar to a book store and simplified the preparation process by dedicating a specific room to sell children’s books. The books remain in the room after each bimonthly event, saving the Friends a significant amount of time in setting up for future sales. Alan’s efforts definitely contribute to the Friends success in raising approximately $2,000 during each of the two-day outdoor book sales.
In addition to his other accomplishments, Alan coordinates, designs and edits a quarterly Friends newsletter for members and has created a bookmark to encourage patrons to share their email so that they can be notified of the Friends book sales and of a variety of library events. His email reminders always reach members and patrons well in advance of scheduled activities.
Thanks to Alan, a webpage for the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Friends is linked directly to the County of Orange website. The page includes pertinent information about the Friends and timely announcements regarding library events. Alan’s computer expertise has also made it possible for the Friends to sell some of its collection online.
In 2010, Alan’s exceptional computer skills were evident during the branch’s renovation. At that time, the branch manager was informed that a workable plan was required in less than seven days in order to move shelving and create a laptop table area. Because funds were not available to map the branch using Auto CAD, Alan quickly volunteered to obtain the same results using the program VISIO. Within a day, he measured the entire branch, entered the information into the computer, created a detailed branch map, and met with staff to create a new floor plan and design two new service desks.
Most recently, Alan has applied his VISIO computer skills to designing a new, more efficient workspace for the Friends of the Library that the library hopes to implement in the near future.
Alan is unique because he is an organized, creative thinker who does many things well. In short, he is an outstanding volunteer and an asset to the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Branch Library.
Thank you and congratulations to Alan Suding, recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Volunteerism Award!
