News ImageOrange County Landfills and Household Hazardous Waste Centers remain open during normal business hours. Materials Exchange Programs (MEPs) are closed until further notice in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We understand that many people are home and using this time to clean out their garages, cupboards, attics, etc. While spring cleaning is beneficial for everyone, proper waste disposal is just as important. Please remember that hazardous items need to be separated from your regular waste and taken to your nearby household hazardous waste collection center.

Where do I recycle my bottles and cans in Orange County?

News ImageMany large-scale recycling facilities across the country have been impacted by global factors tied to contamination issues and exportation of recyclable products overseas (mostly plastic and paper). At the same time, market values for recyclable commodities have plunged, contributing to the closure of many California beverage container recycling centers. The largest beverage container recycling in California, a company called RePlanet, closed all 281 of its locations in August 2019, leaving fewer redemption centers for Orange County residents. Falcons Help Out at the Landfill

News ImageOC Waste & Recycling operates three landfills in Orange County. Many environmental stewardship and protection programs are part of the landfill’s operations. One of the most interesting and unusual is the bird abatement program, which uses falcons to shoo away pesky seagulls that otherwise could carry trash off the landfill and onto beaches or neighborhoods. Sometimes the falcons don’t even have to be flying; the gulls spot them and simply stay away! Since OC’s landfills started the bird abatement program, the number of gulls seen daily has been reduced from thousands to a maximum of fewer than 30 per day.

County Awards $2.4 million in Grant Funds to Support Organics Recycling and Waste Reduction

News ImageSanta Ana, Calif. (March 20, 2018)—The Orange County Board of Supervisors has voted to award a total of $2.4 million to six programs that target state recycling and waste reduction mandates. The County’s Regional Recycling and Waste Reduction Program requires recipients to sustain their grant-funded projects for a minimum of five years and fully sustain them for the final two years.

Waste Management Commission Elects 2018 Leaders

News ImageAt its December 2017 meeting, the Orange County Waste Management Commission elected Commissioner Rob Johnson to serve as Chairman for 2018. He was appointed to the Commission in 2015 and served as Vice Chair in 2017. Chairman Johnson was elected to serve the cities of the Second Supervisorial District in 2015 by the City Selection Committee. He also serves as Council Member for the City of Cypress.

The Commission also elected Commissioner Donald R. Froelich Vice Chair for 2018.He was appointed to the Commission in 2011 and has served as Chairman of the Renewable Technologies and Ad hoc Educational Outreach Committees.
