OC WASTE & RECYCLING COMPLETES ACTIVE SPRING OUTREACH SUPPORTING OC COMMUNITIES
Highlights Include Nine Events, Over 6,000 Residents Reached, Two Campaigns and $5,000 raised for United Way
It’s a wrap! OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) closed out one of its busiest spring seasons for community outreach on Saturday, May 20, at the annual OC Public Works Open House. The event was one of nine supported by the department this April and May alone, aimed at reaching OC residents to educate about eco-friendly recycling habits and waste management services provided by the County. Through these efforts, OCWR reached more than 6,000 residents, supported two campaigns and raised $5,000 for United Way.
“Family-friendly venues are great opportunities to engage county residents of all ages on how to contribute as stewards of our environment through conscious recycling efforts,” stated Board Chairwoman and 2nd District Supervisor, Michelle Steel. “We are proud to leverage some innovative partnerships throughout the region to support these efforts and give back to the communities whenever possible.”
Outreach ranged from local community fairs, to multi-cultural events with Angels Baseball, a Dine-at-the-Dumpbarbeque at the Frank R. Bowerman landfill and two environmental campaigns supporting Earth Day and International Compost Week.
A highlight of the educational events was a hands-on demonstration to show how composting of food and green waste can significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to county landfills and preserve our local resources. In addition, the two campaigns for Earth Day and International Compost Week connected residents with the world-wide campaigns supporting our environment.
OCWR hosts or participates in events with various community partners including United Way, Inside the Outdoors, Discovery Cube, Goodwill OC, Waste Not OC, and various OC cities and unincorporated areas. The partnerships enable OCWR to promote its Eco Challenge message to residents of all ages in a family-friendly environment.
