OC WASTE & RECYCLING NAMED 2017 SILVER AND BRONZE AWARD WINNER
SWANA RECOGNIZES COUNTY LANDFILLS’ COMMITMENT TO OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
Santa Ana, Calif. (August 22, 2017) – OC Waste & Recycling has received two prestigious national awards from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), the leading waste industry association.
The awards recognize OCWR’s excellence in two categories: Landfill Gas and Biogas, for the Bowerman Power Project with Montauk Energy; and Educational Programs, for the agency’s Landfill Tour Program.
“This important national award honoring Bowerman Power spotlights the County’s efforts to be great environmental stewards and community partners,” said 3rd District Supervisor Todd Spitzer, who has been a champion of such projects. “Thanks to our partnerships with Montauk Energy and Anaheim Public Utilities, we have a model example of resource recovery and reuse at our Bowerman Landfill. I’m very proud of the Bowerman Power project and of OCWR’s success.”
The Frank R. Bowerman Landfill (FRB) generates methane-rich gas from as many as 11,500 tons of waste that go into the landfill daily and decompose. Collecting and flaring the landfill gas (LFG) does nothing to maximize the value of this gas, or improve the environment. OCWR partners with Montauk Energy, the project operator, and Anaheim Public Utilities, the power buyer, to bring about this environmental and economic achievement. The project began operation in March 2016, delivering 20 megawatts of power to the grid--enough electricity to serve 14,700 homes.
OCWR’s Landfill Tour Program helps to inform the public about how they can be better environmental stewards by knowing what should and should not go into a landfill. Also, it educates about the how the County provides the essential public service of managing waste and the level to which landfills are feats of environmental engineering, dispelling the misnomer that the landfills are dumps.
The entries can be found on SWANA’s website https://swana.org/Awards/Excellence.aspx.
SWANA’s Excellence Awards Program recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management through their commitment to utilizing effective technologies and processes in system design and operations, advancing worker and community health and safety, and implementing successful public education and outreach programs. Programs also must demonstrate that they are fiscally and environmentally responsible through their compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.
