Board of Supervisors Appoints Thomas G. Mauk As County Executive Officer

(Santa Ana, CA) - Supervisor Tom Wilson, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, today announced the appointment of Thomas G. Mauk to the position of County Executive Officer. Mauk joins the County with an extensive background in public policy administration, management and experience at all levels over the last 30 years.

“The County of Orange is indeed fortunate to retain a candidate with the experience and depth of background” said Wilson. “Mr. Mauk's management skills and broad-based public administration background will enable the Board and the County to continue pursing sound fiscal policy and quality service delivery for the people of our community.”

Mauk has served as City Manager for the cities of La Habra, Whittier and Norco. As City Manager in Whittier, he led recovery efforts following the 1987 earthquake. Mauk has also held leadership positions as Finance and Budget Analyst with the City of Los Angeles and Assistant City Manager in Montclair. His extensive experience includes all aspects of budget development, financial management, labor relations, regional issues and developing relationships with the community and other levels of government.

Mauk has also served in the private sector as client services director for MBIA MuniServices. He has been responsible for providing advice concerning federal and state revenue and budget goals. In Mauk's work with MBIA, he has maintained relationships with jurisdictions throughout California and Texas.

Mauk earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in business administration from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona and a Master's Degree in public administration from the University of Southern California. He has served as an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Public Administration at California State University, Long Beach.

The Board announced Mauk's appointment as County Executive Officer following a closed session meeting today. His official starting date will be October 15 with an annual salary of $215,000. Mauk will succeed James D. Ruth as CEO. Mr. Ruth has served in this role since February 2003.
