Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses that are very common and are passed from one person to another during intimate sexual contact. Although most infected people never develop symptoms, HPV can cause warts (papillomas) and sometimes cancer of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and back of the throat. A vaccine (HPV vaccine) is available to protect against cancers caused by HPV, and is part of the routine immunization schedule for children and adolescents, as well as young adults.
