The professional staffs of public health department laboratories are California State Certified Public Health Microbiologists requiring baccalaureate degrees and training in an approved public health laboratory. Approximately 350 microbiologists are employed at the State and local public health laboratories. Laboratories vary in size from one certified Public Health Microbiologist to fifty depending on population and level of service provided. Each laboratory is directed by an approved Laboratory Director. The Orange County Public Health Laboratory currently employs 29 Public Health Microbiologists in the main laboratory in Santa Ana and a water quality laboratory in Newport Beach.
