ACTION: What does the volunteer do?

Since 1989, Allie Eckert has volunteered her time at Heritage Hill Historical Park and contributed countless hours of service.  Over the past 23 years, she served two terms as president of the park’s volunteer organization, the Amigos de la Colina, written interpretive programs, assisted with holiday and special events, led school tours and conducted weekend walk-in tours.

Heritage Hill Historical Park provides multiple school tours throughout the year, for instance in May 2012, tours were booked during the entire month.  The park also offers seven walk-in tours during the week.  Since park staff cannot accommodate the number of tour requests, volunteers have become an important resource in conducting the tours.

Several times each month, Allie can be counted on to lead guided tours through various buildings, offering an interpretation of Saddleback area history through the artifacts, events and people associated with each building.

Heritage Hill Historical Park also hosts five large events each year with 1,000 plus attendees per event, and Allie rarely misses an opportunity to participate in one of these special programs.  During several of these events, historic buildings are open to the public, offering them an opportunity to learn about the area’s fascinating history.  Volunteers play a key role in allowing the buildings to remain open.  While providing interpretive and educational programs for visitors, the volunteer presence helps protect the historical buildings and artifacts.

Without the support of volunteers such as Allie, park staff would be unable to offer visitors the array of programs that are currently available, and public access to the buildings would be restricted.

IMPACT: What is different as a result of the volunteer's service?

Allie’s long-term commitment and the knowledge and experience that she has acquired over the years have strengthened her leadership skills.  She is a great role model for other volunteers because of her hard work and dedication.  She is passionate in her efforts to share the historical resources of Heritage Hill Historical Park with the community.

INSPIRATION: What makes the volunteer unique/special?

Allie takes the initiative to make things happen.  For instance, she worked with other volunteers to research and create a new school program, enabling OC Parks to accomplish its mission of interpreting Orange County’s history at Heritage Hill while also increasing the number of park visitors through more in-depth programming.

Thank you and congratulations to Allie Eckert, recipient of the Excellence in Volunteerism Award!
