Explorer Post 449
By the authority of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, the following resolution is hereby issued:
WHEREAS, Post 449 was organized in 1959 by Orange County Sheriff James A. Musick and became the first Explorer law enforcement post in the nation; and
WHEREAS, Post 449’s objective is to train young men of today for the future that awaits them in the law enforcement field of tomorrow and to stimulate young men and women's interest in law enforcement practices, the code of ethics, and the fine qualities of citizenship which are expected, to briefly explore all phases of law enforcement and to be a definite approach to juvenile decency; and
WHEREAS, Post 449 began with twenty-eight explorers in Santa Ana who had to meet the Explorer qualifications, that of being between the ages of 14 and 21, maintaining a "B" average in school, having a clean record, exhibiting outstanding citizenship in their community and having a general reputation beyond reproach; and
WHEREAS, in 1973, women were allowed in the Exploring program and were enabled to explore careers in law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, Post 449 participates in a number of community-wide activities which include distributing informational brochures, demonstrating to children how to properly wear bicycle helmets during Bicycle Rodeo events, assisting in crime prevention demonstrations throughout the county, and competing in state-wide law enforcement competitions where they have won several awards in Felony Car Stop, D.U.I., Bomb Threat and Search and Building Search scenarios; and
WHEREAS, the Orange County Sheriff's personnel volunteer as Advisors for the Department's Post and contribute countless hours exposing youths to law enforcement careers; and
WHEREAS, it is highly appropriate to recognize the value and accomplishments of Post 449 to the Orange County community and encourage young men and women to participate in the many enriching law enforcement and community service activities that Post 449 provides;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS does hereby congratulate the Orange County Explorer Post 449 on the 50 years of exemplary service to the community, commends Post 449 for its efforts in reaching out to the public and providing an opportunity for young adults to explore the world of law enforcement so that they may be well prepared for a future career in this field.
