Our core businesses are public safety, public health, environmental protection, regional planning, public assistance, social services and aviation.
Several County agencies and departments offer internships related to communications, public relations, social media and media relations.
Interns will assist staff in the day-to day activities within a busy governmental agency or department. Students or recent graduates selected for the position perform a range of duties from very basic activities to those requiring higher skill levels and professional expertise. Duties may include: assisting in the preparation and distribution of press releases; providing support with social media sites; responding to questions from the public and community organizations; event planning; assisting with department newsletter; creating and updating media talking points; posting updates to the department's Intranet; coordinating special projects and community outreach; creating and updating resource material; and interacting with other governmental- and community-based organizations.
This internship is best suited for students or recent graduates with majors in the following areas: public relations, political science, marketing, communications, journalism or related fields.
Skills, Training or Qualifications:
Excellent written and oral communication skills, experience in working with Microsoft Office Suite, thorough knowledge of social media platforms such as Facebook, Linked-In, Twitter, etc., detail oriented, reliable and neat appearance.
Minimum 12 - 15 hours per week for 3 or more months. Hours can be scheduled in 3- to 8-hour blocks of time during regular business hours (Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.). Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for the internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.
Required Background Screening/Reference Check:
Prior to placement, applicants may be asked to submit contact information for reference checks, and a LiveScan criminal record check through the California Department of Justice will be conducted. A Social Security number and valid state-issued driver’s license are required for the LiveScan.
